Who Will Win Eurovision 2015?
For the last 60 years the ‘cream’ of Europe’s vocal talent has been gathering annually to do battle for crown of Eurovision song contest winner.
The chase for the coveted title started with just seven competitors in 1956, with the UK getting involved a year later and a whole host of countries soon following suit.
Confusingly Australia enter this year’s competition, despite the antipodean nation’s location over 14, 000 miles from host city Vienna.
Austrian drag queen Conchita Wurst roared to success in a dazzling gold sequinned frock and disarming beard accoutrement in 2014.
But who will win this year’s event? And can you successfully name the top 15 and win a million?
Here’s the lowdown on the bookies favourites together with a few of our own tips for success at the Winener Stadhalle Arena.
Sweden: Måns Zelmerlöw's "Heroes" is a catchy hybrid song that starts off as a blues-influenced ballad before mutating into an uplifting pop-dance anthem. Sweden, of course, are no strangers to EuroVision wins and their entry has proven a popular favourite with bookies, EuroVision pundits and viewers alike.
Italy: Italy's entry is sure to be popular with the ladies. It's also popular with the bookies – who knew they had a romantic side!? "Grande Amore" from Il Volo is a stirring Italian-language love ballad with operatic overtones. It might not be as catchy as some of the other entries but it certainly has the goose bumps factor.
Australia: Yeah we know, what the hell right? Still Guy Sebastian's "Tonight Again" is a funky and soulful pop track sure to get your toes tapping. We're not alone in this pick either, bookies, too, are predicting this will be a strong contender.
Russia: "A Million Voices" from Polina Gagarina is Russia's entry. It's a woefully predictable pop ballad with a rich platter of cheesy lyrics – so it's perfect for the EuroVision then. Russia frequently benefits from votes from its neighbours, something which has been commented on quite a lot, most notably by former EuroVision maestro Terry Wogan. Will the same thing happen again this year, or will Russia face some "EuroVision Sanctions"?
UK: It's been too long! Our last win was in 1997 with "Love Shine A Light" by Katrina and the Waves. And, although the bookies aren't predicting much of a result for this year's entry, we think it could still be a surprise contender. "Still In Love With You" by Electro Velvet is an upbeat and infectious electro swing duet with funny lyrics and scat singing – what more do you want?
Other countries that regularly appear in bookies and pundit lists include Slovenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia and Finland. If you want to go for the country with the most wins, meanwhile, then that would be Ireland – with seven wins in total. Though this year's entry, Molly Sterling's mope-fest "Playing With Numbers", doesn't sound like a winner to us, and the bookies and pundits seem to agree.
