WHAT DOES MMA STAND FOR?

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a  sport that blends techniques from a wide range of disciplines, such as boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, Muay Thai, karate, judo, and kickboxing. Fighters compete both standing and on the ground, utilizing striking, grappling, and submission tactics. Bouts usually take place in a cage or ring, with victory achieved through knockout, submission, or judges' decision after multiple rounds. MMA is widely respected for its demands on an athlete’s body and mind.

MMA VS UFC – WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

While the terms MMA and UFC are often used interchangeably, they are not the same. MMA, or Mixed Martial Arts, is the sport itself - a combat discipline that combines striking and grappling techniques from various martial arts.

On the other hand, the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) is a promotion - a specific organization that hosts MMA events. Think of it like this: MMA is the sport, and the UFC is one of the biggest companies that showcases it.

The UFC is the most well-known and influential MMA organization in the world, but it's not the only one. Other major promotions include Bellator, ONE Championship, KSW, and Cage Warriors, each with its own roster of fighters and events.

In summary, UFC is part of MMA, but MMA is much bigger than just the UFC.

HOW MMA FIGHT SCHEDULES IMPACT BETTING ODDS?

Fight schedules play a crucial role in shaping betting odds. Elements such as short-notice bouts, limited recovery time between fights, travel demands, and time zone differences can all affect a fighter’s performance. By analyzing these factors, savvy bettors can gain a strategic edge - spotting potential upsets, identifying over- or undervalued odds, and making more informed predictions.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MMA

Top MMA Styles

Over the past two decades, MMA has become a global sporting phenomenon, with numerous promotions offering a stage for the world’s elite fighters to showcase their talents. UFC is undisputedly the standard-bearer, and most recogniseable MMA promotion out there, other promotions have also carved out pieces of the market for themselves.

Organisations such as KSW and Cage Warriors, for eaxample, support the international development of the sport by giving inexperienced fighters the opportunity to perform in front of a global audience.

UFC Logo

UFC Explained

Without doubt, the UFC is the most prestigous organisation in the world – although it wasn’t always this way! Established over 30 years ago in 1993, the UFC grew slowly at first, before exploding to life in the early part of the 20th century. Now, in 2025, it has grown into a multi-billion dollar promotion, hosting the biggest names in the sport.

Following the Unified Rules of MMA, the UFC has added legitimacy to the MMA world by providing events that promise consistency in judging, weight divisions and fight duration. Moreover, the UFC has brought a level of production to their events that were previously unheard of in the sport.

KSW Logo

KSW Explained

KSW, or Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki, in Poland’s premier MMA promotions. While the Polish promotion lacks the global appeal of UFC, it is still considered to be one of the best promotions in Europe. Due to this reputation, KSW attracts high-quality, European fighters -some of whom have transistioned to the UFC with great success. KSW gives these fighters position to compete in shows which are known for being high-energy, and often supported by a rambunctious crowd.

Cage Warriors Logo

Cage Warriors Explained

Cage Warriors is another of Europe’s most important promotions. It has carved out a reputation for being something of a training ground for new fighters, affording them the opportunity to hone their skills in front of a live audience, before making the leap to a bigger promotions. For example,it is not uncommon to see Cage Warriors fighters turning up in UFC events, with numerous British and Irish fighters starting their career with the European promotion before progressing to the American industry-leader.

UFC VS KSW VS CAGE WARRIORS: WHICH IS BETTER?

In truth, this is not a question that has a simple answer. While the UFC is considered to be the pinnacle, many fans of the sport may prefer to watch the less-polished fighters in other organisations develop and grow in to global superstars. Each one of the UFC, KSW and Cage Warriors serves a specific purpose in the MMA eco-system. The UFC is the highly-polished global leader, KSW serves the European market, while Cage Warriorsis the proving ground for future stars.

This is great news for fans of MMA betting, as it means that Lottoland's MMA sports betting book has an incredibly varied line up, potentially offering great value for those who can seek it out!

HOW DOES MMA BETTING WORK?

Learning to bet on MMA means becoming skilled in predicting the outcome of fights in different, varied markets. Understanding these markets is a key first step to take before you place that first MMA bet!

MMA MONEYLINE: WHAT IS IT?

Simple and straightforward, the moneyline is the most popular form of MMA betting. This is a simple wager, predicting which fighter will win the the event. Each competitor is assigned odds based on their perceived chances of winning – the favourite will have shorter odds, while the underdog will have longer odds.

MMA VICTORY BETS

Going beyond the moneyline, the Victory bet focuses on how a specific fighter wins their bout. Punters can wager on a fight ending by knockout (KO), technical knockout (TKO), submission of judge’s decision. Due to the extra layer of risk involved in predicting a specific outcome, as well as the winner of the fight, these bets tend to offer higher odds than the standard moneyline.

MMA ROUND BETTING

Round Betting is the way in which ounters can wager on when the fight will end,i.e., in which round will the fight conclude? If you choose to place this type of bet you will usually have two options. The first option is that you can choose which round you think the fight will finish. Alternatively, you can bet on the fight going the distance and being decided by the judges scorecard.  Being successful in this type of bet is not easy. Punters will need to have a good understanding of each fighters skills and tendencies, and judging how these fighters compare to each other.

OVER UNDER MMA

Over/Under betting in MMA is usually specifically related to the total number of rounds a fight will last. The “line” will be set by the bookie (at 1.5 or 2.5 rounds, for example), and punters wager on whether the fight will finish before or after that threshold. Again, understanding a fighter’s skill set is key here, as a fighter known for quick finishes may be unlikely to be involved in long fights, while the opposite may be true of a fighter renowned for strong defensive abilities.

WHAT DOES DRAW NO BET MEAN IN MMA?

Draw No Bet removes the possibility of a draw from your bet. Simply put, if the fight ends in a draw, then your stake is returned to you. This is a cautious bet, with less risk than the others discussed in this article. However, as there is less risk involved, you can expect the odds to be shorter.

MMA PROP BETS

Prop bets, or proposition bets, are bets that cover specific events occurring during the fight. Examples of a prop bet include whether or not a fighter will score a knockdown, if the fight will end in less than a minute, or even if a specific strike count will be reached. Due to their specificity, these bets are high-risk.

MMA PARLAY BETTING

A parlay bet, also known as an accumulator, combines multiple bets into a single wager, increasing potential payouts. This could be three moneyline bets spread across three different fights. This is obviously risky, but it offers higher odds than betting on the three events individually. How much higher? I’m glad you asked! Read on, and try out our MMA Odds Calculator to work out the payouts for yourself!

MMA BETTING ODDS: HOW TO READ BETTING ODDS?

To make an informed decision about your bet, you must be able to read and understand the betting odds. Once you understand fractional, decimal, and American odds, you can begin to calculate the potential payouts for single bets and parlays.

AMERICAN, DECIMAL AND FRACTIONAL MMA ODDS: WHAT ARE THEY?

In any sport, odds can be presented in different formats, including decimal, fractional, and American. Decimal odds (e.g., 2.50) represent the total payout per unit staked. In the case of the decimal odds being 2.5, and your stake is £10 you would win £25. Meanwhile, fractional odds (e.g., 3/2) indicate profit relative to the stake amount. If you placed the same £10 on a bet with fractional odds of 3-2, you would win £30.

Rarely used in the UK, American odds show favourites with a minus (-) and underdogs with a plus (+), reflecting the amount needed to bet or the potential profit from a £100 wager.

HOW TO CALCULATE YOUR POTENTIAL WINNINGS

To work out your potential winnings, you usually just need to multiple your stake by the odds being offered. A bet of of £10 on odds will return £25 (10x2.5). Fractional odds require you to divide the numerator by the denominator and then multiply by the stake amount. At this stage, you may be thinking that that sounds like a lot of work – and we agree! That’s why we have developed our very own odds calculator for you to check out!

Using these calculations, you can determine the risk and reward of your bets before placing them.

MMA ODDS CALCULATOR (INTERACTIVE TOOL)

You can Use the MMA odds calculator below to quickly calculate potential returns on your bets based on decimal or fractional odds. The MMA odds calculator works for single bets, and you can add more bets to determine the final odds of any accumulator you may be considering!

BEST MMA BETTING TIPS & STRATEGIES

Winning in MMA betting takes more than luck - it demands smart analysis, discipline, and proven strategies. These MMA betting tips are designed to help you make better fight predictions, avoid common pitfalls, and boost your long-term profits. Focus on key factors like researching fighter styles (grappler vs. striker), tracking recent performance, understanding the impact of weight cuts, spotting value in underdog picks, and practicing solid bankroll management. Whether you're betting on UFC, KSW, or Cage Warriors, a strategic approach beats emotional decisions every time. For a quick overview, check out our infographic highlighting the top MMA betting strategies used by experienced bettors.

MMA betting tips infographic with seven key strategies: research fighters, weight cuts, stats, value bets, avoid emotions, consider underdogs, and bankroll management.

MMA FIGHTERS: HOW TO PICK?

Choosing the right fighter to bet on involves analyzing several factors, including:

  • Fighting Style: Strikers vs. grapplers - who has the stylistic advantage?
  • Recent Performance: Look at their last few fights, not just their overall record.
  • Fight Camp & Training: Fighters training with elite teams often perform better.
  • Weight Cuts: Extreme weight cuts can drain a fighter’s stamina.
  • Injuries & Layoffs: Long absences and past injuries can impact performance.

Assessing these aspects helps in making smarter betting decisions.

MMA EXPERT PICKS: FOLLOW IT!

Many professional bettors and analysts provide expert fight predictions based on in-depth research. While following expert picks can be helpful, don’t rely on them blindly - always verify their reasoning, check stats, and make informed decisions.

MMA UNDERDOGS: SHOULD YOU BET?

Betting on underdogs can be highly profitable, but it comes with risks. Here’s when it makes sense:

  • Favorable Matchups: If the underdog has a stylistic edge (e.g., a strong grappler against a weak wrestler).
  • Overhyped Favorites: Sometimes favorites are overrated due to popularity rather than skill.
  • Close Fights with High Odds: When odds don’t reflect the true competitiveness of a fight.

While underdog bets can offer big returns, selective betting is key—don’t chase longshots without solid reasoning.
