WHY BRITS WOULD KEEP A LOTTERY WIN SECRET
Britons, it turns out, are a secretive bunch. Ask 2,000 of them whether they would shout about a big lottery win, and almost half say they would rather keep it completely to themselves. Only 35 per cent would feel comfortable telling people outright. The rest would quietly keep the news to themselves.
That is the finding from a new study commissioned by Lottoland.co.uk, and it raises a rather interesting question: how would you even know? The answer, according to the same research, is that you probably could figure it out. Because while secret winners may say nothing, their behaviour tends to do the talking for them.
The reasons for keeping a win under wraps are surprisingly relatable. Topping the list are concerns about loan requests from people who come out of the woodwork, unwanted media attention, and other people's jealousy. Winners also worry about the effects on friendships and family dynamics, about losing their privacy, and about being judged for how they choose to spend the money.
In short, winning a lot of money sounds wonderful right up until the moment other people find out about it.
THE 15 SIGNS THAT GIVE SECRET WINNERS AWAY
Despite their best efforts at discretion, 63 per cent of would-be secret winners admit their behaviour would change in noticeable ways. If you suspect someone in your life has had a very lucky day and is not letting on, here are some subtle clues that might give them away.

The 15 TellTale Signs
|

|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Getting small home upgrades done more frequently | ||
| 2 | Being more generous with birthday presents | ||
| 3 | Being noticeably calmer or less stressed about everyday life | ||
| 4 | Sneaking in more weekend getaways or spa breaks | ||
| 5 | Replacing things immediately instead of "making do" | ||
| 6 | Working less | ||
| 7 | Upgrading small everyday items like kitchen gadgets or tech accessories | ||
| 8 | Talking more about future plans or long-held dreams | ||
| 9 | Wearing newer or slightly pricier clothes without mentioning shopping | ||
| 10 | Flying premium economy, or even first class | ||
| 11 | Booking five-star hotels when travelling | ||
| 12 | Having a wardrobe glow-up | ||
| 13 | Ordering takeaways or eating out more often than usual | ||
| 14 | Buying more expensive brands at the supermarket | ||
| 15 | Buying higher-end versions of usual hobbies or craft supplies | ||
Number three on that list may be the most telling. If someone who once visibly dreaded Monday mornings suddenly seems completely unbothered by them, something in their life may have quietly changed.
SECRETIVE, BUT NOT SELFISH
Staying quiet does not mean keeping everything. A generous 74 per cent of respondents said they would share their winnings with friends and family, even if 29 per cent would stop short of revealing the exact amount. Four in 10 people said they would be happy to share the news of a win.
Charity also plays a significant role. Around 40 per cent of respondents said they would donate a large portion of a major jackpot to good causes. Based on a hypothetical £10 million win, the average amount people said they would give away was £1.46 million.
HOW WINNERS SAY THEY WOULD HANDLE THE MONEY
The research also challenges the stereotype that lottery winners spend everything immediately. Nearly nine in 10 respondents (89 per cent) said they believed they would be sensible with a large win.
More than half said they would not spend it all at once, exactly half would create an emergency savings fund, and 47 per cent would invest in property or other income-generating opportunities.
The overall picture is of a nation that would win quietly, give generously, invest wisely, and make small lifestyle upgrades without making a fuss. Which, in many ways, sounds very British indeed.
