Many lottery winners choose to remain anonymous when they claim their winnings, perhaps wary of the attention that the windfall would bring from both friends and strangers. Some of those who won the lottery have, however, decided to go public and share their good news with the world.

It is these public winners that we are focussed on today. We are taking a dive into the people who won the lottery both in the UK and abroad, discovering who the people were behind the jackpot. In addition, we are also looking at the unfortunate couple who thought they had won the lottery, and how a seven-foot-tall cartoon characters came to claim a jackpot in China!

Who Won The Lottery in the UK?

A lot of those who won the lottery in the UK have chosen to remain anonymous, but there are a few who have made their story public. They have shared with us who they are, and how they won and how they have used their winnings to make a difference not only in their lives, but in their local communities as well.

Joe and Jess Thwaite | Gloucester | £184,262,899

The Thwaites from Gloucester became the UK’s biggest ever lottery winners. Joe thought opted to buy his EuroMillions Lucky Dip online, as he usually does when there is a big jackpot looming.Joe was in bed when he was informed via email that he had just become the winner of over £184 million. Rather than jumping, shouting, cheering, dancing, or taking part in any other form elaborate, over-the-top, but very understandable, form of celebration, Joe lay in stunned silence waiting for his wife to wake. After having their win confirmed, the Thwaite’s would be forgiven for going on a spending spree of epic proportions. Instead, their first purchases included modest items like a wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a second-hand Volvo!

Colin and Christine Weir | North Ayrshire | £161,653,000

Colin and Christine Weir were once the winners of the biggest ever European lottery payout. The huge £161 million win immediately retired the camera man and senior nurse and led them to a life where they were able to give back to their local community.

The Weir Charitable Trust was established in 2013, and has helped to fund sporting projects, youth theatre programmes and animal welfare campaigns. Colin was even able to purchase a majority stake in his local football team Partick Thistle with the intention of returning ownership of the club to its fans – a dream that came true in 2023.

That is not to say that Weir’s did not also enjoy some of the finer things in life! Colin amassed a fleet of luxury cars and they both purchased magnificent homes on the Scottish coast. These purchases, however, shrink in comparison to the admirable impact that their charitable donations have made.

Adrian and Gillian Bayford | Cambridgeshire | £148,656,000

Gillian was putting the kids to bed when Adrian decided to check the lottery results on his phone. He checked, double checked then chaos ensued. He ran to the bedroom, turned on the lights and tried to explain they had won the top prize. Gillian, however, went “ballistic”, unamused that Adrian had woken the kids.

Anger soon turned to joy however, and the pair excitedly started calling their families to tell them the good news – that the Bayford’s were now one of Britain’s wealthiest families and £148 million richer!

Frances and Patrick Connolly | Hartlepool | £114,969,775

“I’m addicted to helping others” said Frances Connolly in 2022. Frances and her husband Patrick won £114.9 million in 2019, and they have given away more than half of that amount since then. Frances, who had always believed she would the win the lottery, had already drawn up a list of people she would help when she won the lottery – before it had even happened!

Since 2019 Frances estimates that they have given away around £60 million to family, friends, and charitable projects. She had agreed a budget with her husband for how much they would donate to good causes each year. By 2022 she had already spent the entire budget for every year up to 2032!

Who Won the World’s Biggest Lotteries?

The PowerBall and MegaMillions lotteries from USA are responsible for the biggest jackpots of all time. Similar to the UK, many of these winners have chosen to remain anonymous. However, some of the biggest winners of all time have disclosed their wins – including the biggest lottery winner of all time.

Edwin Castro | California, USA | $2.04 Billion

The biggest lotto payout of all time came in the November 2022 in the American PowerBall. While the jackpot was $2.04 billion, the winner – Edwin Castro – took home a lump sum of $997.6 million after taxes.

It would appear that Edwin has needed little time to begin enjoying his newfound wealth – and why not! He has already picked up a vintage Porsche 911 and spent over $76 million on three different California mansions!

FLL Wolverine Club | Michigan, USA |$1.05 Billion

Most of us have either been a part of, or been asked to be a part of, a lottery syndicate. More often than not, a few small wins accumulate, but no huge wins occur, many members lose interest, leave and the syndicate that once inspired such excitement is left to die.

Maybe it’s time to rethink that syndicate though, as the FLL Wolverine Club have proved that syndicates can, and do, hit the big jackpot! The four-person syndicate in Wisconsin hit the top prize in the MegaMillions draw, winning an equal share of $557 million after tax.

Manuel Franco | Wisconsin, USA | $768 million

On 26 March 2019, Manuel Franco’s was trying to save $1,000. The next day he won $768 million in the PowerBall lottery, and those thoughts became a thing of the past! The 24-year-old remembers having a feeling that there was something different about the day he spent $10 on PowerBall tickets – he remembers thinking about winking at the security camera as he bought his ticket!

The ”weird feeling” was proven to be prophetic, as he won one of the biggest jackpots of all time! As he checked the tickets that he had bought, he was already happy that one of them had won $4. Then came the $768 million ticket. He checked, double checked and then, in his own words, “screamed of five or ten minutes”!

Scott Godfrey | Morro Bay, USA | $699.8 Million

Scott Godfrey was watching TV the day after the PowerBall draw on 4 October 2021. The news was reporting on the local store that had sold the previous night’s winning PowerBall jackpot. Scott remembered that he had actually bought a ticket from the very same store.

Scott checked his tickets and realised that one was the winner of one of the biggest jackpots in history! After taxes, he received a lump sum of $496 million, and quickly set about setting up a charitable foundation to help put his fortune to good use. Meanwhile, the store that sold him the ticket were also rewarded with a cool $1 million bonus!

Who Bet and Won on The Lottery With Lottoland?

At Lottoland we are proud to have minted multiple millionaires since our inception in 2013. Our freshly made millionaires bet on lotto’s such as PowerBall, Eurojackpot and the Irish Lotto, and one winner remains the recipient of the largest ever online gambling payout.

Christina | Germany | £79 Million

Christina was a cleaner in Berlin in 2018 when she made her second bet with Lottoland. She chose her EuroJackpot numbers with the help of her mother, then went to work. It was while she was in work that she realised that she had matched all five numbers plus the two Euro Numbers to win £79 million!

A stunned Christina quit her job instantly (why not!) and began planning her dream holiday – travelling coast-to-coast across America in a camper van.

Matthias | Germany | £19.45 Million

In 2016, IT consultant Matthias bet on the outcome of the Saturday 30 April German Lotto draw. His wife chose a random selection of numbers, including shoe sizes and birthdays. The selection proved to be fortuitous as they matched every number to win £19.45 million, which was the biggest ever payout by Lottoland at the time. At the time Matthias told us that he planned to spend the money on family, charity, and a classic red Ferrari!

Michael | Germany | £12.21 Million

The German Lotto has been a happy hunting ground for Lottolanders over the years, as two of out three biggest winners have bet on its outcome. Michael won £12.21 million in February 2016, and planned to live out his new life as a millionaire in private. Unlike record breaker Christina and many other lotto millionaires, Michael was planning to remain working and was adamant that the win would not change him.

Mr Logan | UK | £5.13 Million

In 2019, Mr Logan became the biggest Lottoland winner from the UK. The 50-year-old made a £3 Quick Pick bet on the outcome of the Irish Lotto which cooped him £5.13 million! Mr Logan said that he at a fair when he found out that he had just become Lottoland UK's newest and biggest millionaire. The win was “surreal” and a “shock”, but our winner hopes that the £3 bet will now help him to retire.

The Couple Who Missed Out On The Lottery

Amidst all this unbridled joy and jubilation, we should also spare a thought for the couple who missed out on the lottery. In early 2021, Rachel Kennedy and Liam McCrohan had played the same numbers for five weeks in a row, playing online and making their payments by direct debit.

At the sixth time of asking, the couple’s numbers came up and they thought they had won the mammoth £182 million jackpot. Rachel excitedly phoned Liam to share the news, then they got in touch with the lottery operator to claim their prize. That’s when it all came crashing down.

It turned out that they hadn’t enough money in their account to cover the direct debit, so the ticket was never actually purchased. The heartbroken young couple were left devastated by the news that they had not, in fact, become instant millionaires.

The Mystery of Who Won the Lottery in China

We will leave you with the story of a very unusual winner in China. As we have mentioned, some people choose to publicly claim their winnings, and others choose to remain anonymous. Sometimes this is the winner’s prerogative, on other occasions the jurisdiction in which they won the lottery may force them to go public.

Regardless of whether voluntary or not, there is no right or wrong way to claim your winnings – or is there? One lotto winner in China took a very different approach to claiming his winnings, for reasons not many will agree with!

The man, referred to as Li, won the equivalent of £24.7 million in a provincial lottery in China. As part of the process to claim their prize, winners must claim it in person. Li decided to go in disguise, and dressed in a 7-foot-tall, bright yellow cartoon costume. The reason for this unusual appearance? He wanted to disguise his identity and keep his win a secret…from his own family!

Li was concerned that if his wife and child found out about the win that they may become conceited, not work hard in the future, or start to feel superior to others. It’s an interesting outlook to say the least! We just wonder how one goes about hiding a 7-foot cartoon costume from their wife…and £24 million!
