A CHRISTMAS FEAST WITH A SPANISH TWIST
Big John, known for his “BOSH” catchphrase and larger-than-life reactions to hearty comfort food, was the ideal candidate to taste-test a festive feast inspired by both nations. With millions of social media followers watching his every culinary adventure, his verdict carries real weight among food lovers looking for something new. The collaboration with Lottoland marks the build-up to the £2.4 billion El Gordo Christmas Lottery, often described as the biggest and most exciting lottery in the world.
BIG JOHN’S VERDICT: JAMON IN, SPROUTS OUT!
The centrepiece of the Spanish selection was traditional jamon, served in thick, flavourful slices that immediately impressed the influencer. Joining the jamon were Pastas de España, a much-loved festive sweet in Spain. Big John gave them a glowing review as he worked his way through the spread. What didn’t fare so well, however, were the British Brussels sprouts. In his typical blunt humour, he declared that sprouts could “do one”, especially when compared with the Spanish alternatives on offer.
BRITS ARE DREAMING OF CHRISTMAS ABROAD
The research behind Lottoland’s festive feast gives a wider view of how people in the UK are feeling about Christmas traditions. Out of the 2,000 adults surveyed, six in ten said they would love to spend Christmas in another country. Whether it’s to reduce the pressure of hosting, avoid grey skies or simply break out of the usual routine, the desire for a different kind of Christmas is growing.
Many respondents said that after years of familiar traditions, they wanted to see how other cultures celebrate the season. Nearly a third said they would use the opportunity to visit friends or family living abroad, while more than half simply wanted to create new memories in an entirely different setting.
FOOD, FRIENDS AND NEW TRADITIONS
Festive food plays a major role in the appeal of a foreign Christmas. Almost half of those surveyed said they would like to try seasonal dishes from other countries, ranging from Mediterranean feasts to winter warmers from colder climates. Spain was among the top dream destinations, alongside the USA and Australia, with Canada, Germany and Switzerland also featuring strongly in people’s wish lists.
One of the most surprising findings was that 40% of respondents said they would happily follow Japan’s tradition of eating KFC on Christmas Day. Others said they were intrigued by the Feast of Seven Fishes enjoyed in Italy, while nearly one in ten said Spanish mantecados – a crumbly, buttery shortbread – would be high on their must-try list.
BUT THE CLASSIC BRITISH DINNER STILL REIGNS
Despite this curiosity about the wider world, the classic British Christmas dinner maintains its crown. Three-quarters of those surveyed said that nothing beats a traditional roast with all the trimmings. For many, Christmas simply wouldn’t feel the same without turkey, stuffing, gravy, pigs in blankets and, yes, even the divisive sprouts.
Almost half of the respondents admitted they would miss these familiar dishes if they spent Christmas abroad. Others said the absence of classic festive TV specials would feel unusual, while more than a quarter said they would even miss Britain’s cold winter weather if they travelled somewhere warm for the holidays. The data shows that nostalgia and comfort continue to play a big part in how the nation celebrates.
A FEAST THAT BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER
Big John’s festive fusion feast is a reminder that Christmas doesn’t need to repeat the same story as years gone by. As traditions evolve and global influences filter into British homes, there’s ample room for experimentation and creativity. Whether your Christmas dinner stays firmly rooted in British tradition or takes inspiration from Spain, Japan or anywhere else, what matters most is sharing good food and good company.
